Getting results
In chapter 8 of the social organization it discusses getting results. It says that all too often everyone just focuses on the means of getting results, instead of just focusing on results. This can be detrimental I'm mass collaboration. In mass collaboration it is hard to follow a strict set of rules or a plan for results..in a community setting it comes about in its own time. If a manager of community took control and made a set plan for getting results, it would disrupt the community. A community needs to work it out on its own and in its own. I think this relates a lot to a classroom setting when it comes to group projects. As a group we need the freedom to think and make decisions on our own. If a teacher told us everything we had to do and how to do it...there really would be no need for group collaboration and would defeat the purpose of being in a group in the first place. I think a little bit of guidelines is okay, but the big decisions need to be left up to the group.

I agree with your thoughts on groups involving collaboration and having the freedom to be creative however I do think guidelines need to always be set to layout what exactly is required.
ReplyDeleteI definitely agree and feel like this could be applied to politics and the economy. The government looks at theory and what they want to accomplish a lot of the time instead really trying out to find out the end result. For example, when the recession hit and the government wanted to send out a stimulus (the means) to bring back the economy, the result was that people just saved the extra money instead of spending, which back fired.
ReplyDeleteResults are critical. Where do you draw the line. As you pointed out, mass collaboration is import but how hard should we push it. If one forces it and only looks to see that it is being used, there is no telling how helpful it will actually be. This is where you see your mass collaboration fail into just the simple presence of social media.
